Great kit to share. Date: July 6, 2009
Pros: Effective, Engaging, Grade Level Appropriate

We paired eighth graders with third graders with wonderful results. The third graders were learning about their family linkages and made the necklaces as Mother's Day gifts.

I have used this kit for an introduction to genetics in a college course. The course is for non-biology students but it would also be good for biology students. The students enjoy the activity and it helps to bring hands-on experience to genetics.

We use the DNA necklace for our 8th grade institute. We invite 8th graders to visit our campus and experience college life for the day. The students enjoyed the activity and learned so much about how DNA works. Plus, they each took home the necklace with their own DNA.

Pros: Effective, Engaging, Grade Level Appropriate

When I first got this kit, I thought my 11th grade biology students would find it too hokey, with the necklace with their own DNA. I required that they all complete the exercise to find their DNA and make the necklace, but left it up to them whether or not to wear it. They all were intrigued by the exercise and quite excited to find their own DNA. Some were disappointed not to see an actual double helix, but several of them were so intrigued and pleased with the result that they wore their necklaces for the rest of the day. I felt this was an excellent exercise to make the DNA concept something of a visual reality. This made DNA more real for the students, made them more involved with what we learned about it, and made their learning experience stronger.
