Great but delicate Date: August 30, 2009
Pros: Effective, Engaging, Saves Time, Grade Level Appropriate
Cons: tend to die easily, insifficient numbers in shipment

Termites are excellent for pen trail following behavior. But they are delicate and often most or the entire shipment will die within 24 hours. Carolina is good for insurance though. When I first starting ordering termites from Carolina, they gave ample workers so that few would still be alive when I needed them. Recently, they have really been skimping and it is difficult to see more than 5 crawling around when I get it. Make sure you have a backup plan in case they all die.

Kids will remember this! Date: June 9, 2009
Pros: Effective, Engaging, increases understanding of insect behavior

Even without the lesson plan, this demonstration makes quite an impression. With three "variables" - pencil, sharpie and pen - kids are asked to guess which will lay down a scent that the termites will follow. After the initial demo of concentric circles with the three types of writing instruments, lines are laid crossing the circles to reinforce the observation of this unique insect behavior. Kids of a variety of ages (6-11) were just amazed.
